28 September — International Safe Abortion Day 2026

Every September 28th, we join advocates, health providers, and civil society worldwide to mark International Safe Abortion Day. This year’s theme — “Solidarity in Action: Advance Reproductive Justice and Urgently Strengthen Health Systems for Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC)!” — could not be more urgent for Europe.

ESCRH’s own 2026 Position Paper on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights paints a continent of stark contrasts. According to the European Abortion Policies Atlas 2025, only 2 of 49 European countries offer strong legal protection for abortion, while it remains largely criminalized in 3 others. Sweden tops the regional ranking at 94.6%; Andorra (0%) and Malta (3.7%) permit no legal abortion at all. Even where abortion is legal, access is often illusory: mifepristone remains unlicensed or unavailable in 10 European countries, mandatory waiting periods persist in Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Finland, and Italy despite WHO guidance against them, and in parts of Italy conscientious objection among gynaecologists exceeds 60–70%, effectively denying legal care to women who cannot travel elsewhere.

Globally, restricting abortion does not reduce how often it happens — it only makes it more dangerous. Unsafe abortion still causes an estimated 39,000 preventable deaths every year.

Comprehensive Abortion Care means more than legality on paper. It means mifepristone and misoprostol available in every country, conscientious objection that never blocks emergency care, telemedicine where appropriate, and post-abortion care — including contraception counselling — for everyone, regardless of the legal status of abortion where they live.

The regression of sexual and reproductive health and rights anywhere is a threat to human rights everywhere. On this Safe Abortion Day, ESC reaffirms: abortion is healthcare, not a crime, and every health system in Europe must be equipped — and required — to provide it safely and with dignity.
