Gabon-France training programme for midwife leaders of Central Africa

Since  2009 we have been assessing needs, feasible medical practices and avenues for training health professionals. African midwives are on the front line of reproductive health services.  GCG has provided initial on-site training to hundreds of midwives. The proposed project aims to reinforce those trainings with experiences in a context of legal abortion with a high case load permitting more intensive training. We have been successful in engaging the directors of two abortion and family planning services in or near Paris, France, to provide 10-day internships for midwives from our GCG network.  The goal is exposure to a normalized integrated abortion practice with surgical abortion, medical abortion, ultrasound, IUD insertion, post-abortion care with misoprostol and/or aspiration and counselling.  This experience promises to enhance knowledge and skills, authority to head post-abortion and contraception services in Africa, and sustainable collaboration with an international network of professional abortion providers.

Reconstruction of the service for children and women in the primary health care centre in Krupanj

Dom zdravlja Krupanj is a state primary health care centre which provides medical care for app. 18,000 inhabitants. Krupanj is small town located in western Serbia, near the Drina river and boarder with Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was badly damaged during the recent floods in Serbia. Connections between Krupanj and surrounding larger cities are frequently difficult due to bad roads and hilly terrain. Primary health care centre plays an important role in providing health care to all inhabitants, including children and women, as a most vulnerable ones. Health care service for women and children was flooded, so it needs reconstruction. Due to severe damages of the Service for health care of children and women in the Primary health care centre in Krupanj, the most important is to restore the area and enable for the work with patients. Therefore, the main objective of this project would be to conduct construction works, painting, purchasing new furniture and repairing old. With the money, eventually generously donated by the European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health, it would be possible to put the service for children’s and women’s health care in function, again. The pictures before and after reconstruction would be provided, and if needed, detailed financial report.

Promoting self-care and a healthy and responsible sexuality among low-income Chilean young people.

The project is aimed at improving the ability of low-income, young people aged 14-24 years to make informed choices about sexuality and sexual behavior by providing information they can understand and assimilate to prevent unwanted pregnancy and unwanted STIs, including HIV. To have an impact, it is necessary to implement innovative initiatives to inform and educate. The project involves “Tables Traveling Information (TTIs)” and “Information Communication Technologies’ (ICTs) “implementation, as explained in the next two paragraphs.

The TTIs are public information booths, kiosks or stands where young, trained, peer sex educators provide face to face information to young, poor people about sexual and reproductive health and rights, STI and HIV/AIDS and contraceptives use. A major focus is on the correct and consistent use of male condoms as a method of dual protection. The TTIs (information booths) will be set up in several youth public spaces in three low-income districts in Santiago of Chile where the teenage pregnancy rates are the highest.

The ICTs include the use of internet tools as Facebook, YouTube, blog, webpage and e-mail to providing interactive information about sex education.

All the messages to be conveyed will be prepared and tested among young people living in poor districts of Santiago in order to have appropriate and useful contents and materials for target young people. In addition, this process will be supported by expert health professionals of Prosalud.

It is impossible to know what behavioural changes the program will effectuate given the highly personal nature of sexuality. As the project is a response to the absence of reliable sources of information, the service should establish it as a bona fide information source.
