23 Dec Letter from the President, Mary Short
Dear friends and colleagues,
Today, I want to share with you a short message of thanks for your support and commitment to the ESC.
Covid 19 has impacted on all aspects of Society both economically and emotionally. As Health care professionals we have possibly faced some of the most challenging experiences of our working lives, rapidly changing the manner in which we deliver health care. Earlier in the year we faced the challenge of supply and demand—everything from PPE to medicines. Telemedicine was, for many of us, a new departure, and protocols were and are constantly reviewed to provide safe and appropriate health care remotely.
As a global community the ESC appreciates your endeavours to keep Sexual and Reproductive health to the forefront, as often it is one of the first casualties in a national or global crisis.
The 16th Congress of the ESC, due to be held in Dublin was cancelled — at the time the decision appeared difficult — in hindsight it was the best course of action for the Society.
The education committee, acted innovatively organising webinars which have been very well “attended” — and hopefully continue to do so.
The website and media committee organised an on line discussion platform “DocMatter” which offers a facility for on line engagement with all our members —– points of view that generate debate are always welcome!
The Journal is the Society’s platform for research and review articles undertaken by the membership.
The roll out of a Covid vaccination programme gives us a renewed sense of hope—with this in mind preparations are underway for the 16th Congress of the ESC to take place in Ghent at the beginning of September 2021.
The programme is in the final stages of preparation —- it is an innovative and exciting scientific and educational programme while reflecting on the challenges we have faced and how they have changed the way we practice medicine.
A very special thanks to the Executive committee who have agreed to stay on until the next Congress; to members of the Board both old and new and to Peter, Ria and Nancy for their commitment and support to the ESC.
Season’s greetings to all of you. I hope that you continue to remain safe and well.
I look forward to seeing you all in Ghent in September 2021.
Mary Short, ESC President
